Heather James Fine Art Presents 10 Paintings: Discover a mesmerising collection of ten paintings by Winston Churchill, unveiled by Heather James Fine Art, and delve into his illustrious artistic legacy. Unseen by the public until today, these artworks, which originated from a single-family owner, make up the greatest private collection of Churchill’s paintings outside of the United Kingdom. Although Churchill is best known as a distinguished leader and Nobel laureate novelist, his hidden side as a painter provides a rare glimpse into his personality.
“Heather James is delighted to showcase this exceptional assortment of Winston Churchill’s paintings,” says Jim Carona, co-founder of Heather James Fine Art. “Churchill’s painting career reveals a deep side of his character, but his status as a statesman is undeniable. Like excerpts from his journal, these paintings testify eloquently to his deepest feelings and experiences. Since we have had the honour of working directly with Churchill’s descendants and his creative legacy, we take great pride in our expertise in his works. Unveiling these extraordinary works to the public is an enormous pleasure for us.
Heather James is hosting an exhibition called “Winston Churchill: Making Art, Making History” that encourages people to think about how painting shaped Churchill’s complex life.
Heather James has selected ten paintings that display a wide range of genres, from dramatic landscapes to vibrant still lifes and tranquil interior portraits. Inspired by the Impressionists and following his own artistic instincts, Churchill specialised in landscape painting. Churchill, following in the footsteps of the Impressionists, would often go outside to paint en plein air, giving his landscapes an energy and urgency that was reminiscent of the movement. Each of Churchill’s landscape paintings is a story fragment that sheds light on his varied experiences in the difficult worlds of politics and literature.
You can purchase some very remarkable works from this collection, including:
“On the Rance Near St. Malo”: This artwork, which was meant to be a gift for the Tate Museum, was lost in the museum’s storage room for almost half a century.
The painting “The Bay of Eze” stands as a tribute to the lasting friendship between Churchill and his lifelong companion Consuelo Balsan, painted close to Balsan’s home.
“Oranges and Lemons”: Painted during a stay at La Pausa, Coco Chanel’s former home, this artwork highlights a historical and creatively significant occasion.
While grieving a personal loss and seeking solace in Scotland, “View of Loch Choire” came to fruition as a representation of Churchill’s emotional terrain.
