When Michael Kors was just 14, he visited his grandparents in Los Angeles and was instantly captivated by the glamour of Rodeo Drive. In the height of the ’80s, the street reminded him of a scene straight out of a Jackie Collins novel, and it left an impression on the born-and-raised New Yorker. Fast-forward three decades, and that teenage dream came full circle when Kors opened his first store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Although the pandemic led to its temporary closure, Kors made a grand comeback in late April with a new, gleaming 1,500-square-foot boutique.
To mark his West Coast return, Kors hosted a special celebration that married two of LA’s culinary icons—Spago and Canter’s Deli—for a night that blended high-end with classic comfort food. Guests enjoyed an eclectic spread featuring Jidori chicken, pastrami sandwiches, and plenty of martinis. Kors humorously described the night’s theme to his guests, saying, “This is hot dogs and evening gowns!” The guest list sparkled with stars like Olivia Wilde, Kerry Washington, Mindy Kaling, and Shailene Woodley, all of whom Kors acknowledged with a heartfelt toast: “Thank you to all the women in the room for bringing my work to life, because without you, it’s all bullshit.”
After the main courses and salads were paired with classic deli sides—“I ordered the matzoh ball soup,” Zoey Deutch proudly noted—the celebration moved into the Kibitz Room for dessert, Marisa Tomei and other visitors couldn’t resist dancing along to the disco sounds DJ Kitty Ca$h was playing. Amid the upbeat melodies, a selection of sweets took front stage, including a whimsical allusion to New York’s famous black-and- white cookie, each imprinted with “MKC,” as a delicious homage to the company.
