In honor of the brand’s 150th anniversary, Old Forester is launching its most remarkable bottle: a decanter filled with excellent 12½-year-old whiskey. One hundred fifty bottles were intended for exclusive tastings and events, while the remaining 500 bottles were kept in storage due to the 2020 worldwide pandemic. The 500 bottles were initially made for the Brown family and essential partners. These uncommon bottles are now being offered to the general public.
The limited-edition decanter is priced at $2,500 and may only be bought on oldforester.com today; no sales are made at the distillery. Only on December 5, the anniversary of Prohibition’s end, may buyers pick up their bottles. Purchasers will receive the exclusive bottle and a VIP tour of the Old Forester distillery with members of the Brown family, replete with drinks and food.
Chris Morris, the Master Distiller, individually chose six barrels for this unique decanter on April 18, 2008. The bourbon matured in Warehouse J, top floor 8, Rick 44, tier 1, and was bottled 150 months later in 2020.
Old Forester Master Taster Meliss Rift said, “What better way to celebrate that legacy than offering this rare decanter to the public?” Old Forester is the only bourbon that existed before, during, and after Prohibition.
The wood used for the packaging, displayed in a handcrafted, unique wooden box, was salvaged from the 2015 Whiskey Row fire at Old Forester, which almost destroyed the block.
The 150th decanter’s design honors the iconic holiday decanters from the 1950s and 1960s, which renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy first created. The Frazier Museum, the beginning point of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and situated at 9th and Main in downtown Louisville, will host a year-long exhibit to delve further into this tradition. With a focus on the mid-century decanters, the show offers a unique look into the rich history of Old Forester.
