These cars, which were historically raced as friendly rivals, are now being built and tested under one roof at Mulliner – Bentley’s bespoke and coachbuilding division. The decision to create 12 The Speed Six Continuation Series models of both the 4½ Litre Supercharged ‘Blower’ and the 6½ Litre Speed Six was made with the understanding of Bentley’s rich legacy and reputation for excellence.
The meticulous process involved close collaboration between Bentley Mulliner engineers, craftspeople, technicians, and British specialists.
After thousands of hours of development, the Continuation Series models faithfully replicate the originals from 1930, with minor adjustments for modern legality. The projects have also served as a platform for passing on traditional skills within Bentley, ensuring the preservation of artisanal craftsmanship.
With the final Blower Continuation Series cars delivered, attention has shifted to the Speed Six project. Two original Speed Sixes serve as master models, providing invaluable data on dimensions, materials, and components. The Continuation cars will include modifications made by the Bentley works team to enhance reliability and performance.
Meticulous attention has been paid to every detail, including the selection of authentic period paints and the fabrication of over 600 individual new parts for the race-spec engine. Initial dyno testing has shown promising results, with the engines developing slightly more power than their predecessors.
The Continuation Series program aims to revive these iconic models and pass on skills to future generations. Skilled artisans work alongside young apprentices in the Mulliner workshops, ensuring the legacy of craftsmanship continues.
The testing phase for the Speed Six includes rigorous track testing to ensure functionality and durability under challenging conditions. Meanwhile, customers are offered a personal fitting service to ensure they feel comfortable behind the wheel of their models.
The Speed Six, a high-performance version of the 6½ Litre, achieved remarkable success in racing, including consecutive wins at Le Mans in 1929 and 1930. With its modified engine and racing pedigree, the Speed Six remains a legendary figure in Bentley history, setting new standards of dominance at Le Mans.
