PLANO, Texas (Dec. 19, 2023) — Following the inauguration of a groundbreaking epoch of Lexus Electrified in January 2023 as the primary all-electric conveyance in the brand’s repertoire, the Lexus RZ observes various enhancements in 2024, encompassing a brand-new alternative – the RZ 300e with FWD. The RZ 300e manifests a superior EPA-estimated range evaluation of up to 266 miles, providing patrons with more adaptability during their everyday journey.

Also novel in 2024, Copper Crest is appended as an accessible exterior hue alternative in mono- and bi-tonal. In contrast, a dual-voltage charging cord for 120V and 240 outlets becomes standardized on all models.

An Array of RZs to Complement Driving Requirements

RZ 300e

Propelled by a 72.8kWh Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) lithium-ion battery and exclusively available with FWD, the 2024 RZ 300e accomplishes a total system horsepower rating of 201. The RZ 300e showcases an EPA-estimated range rating of 266 miles when furnished with 18” wheels and an EPA-estimated MPGe rating of 137/112/125 (city/highway/combined). With 20” wheels, the EPA-estimated range rating is 224 miles and EPA-estimated MPGe rating is 114/96/105.

A subframe has been implemented for the FWD model, supplanting the rear eAxle of the AWD model. This subframe curtails vibrations and noise, adding to a serene and peaceful excursion.

RZ450e

DIRECT4, an all-wheel drive system inaugurated with the 2023 Lexus RX, is harnessed in the RZ 450e and showcases a rear eAxle coupled with the engine and front motor. The DIRECT4 system employs two high-output, high-torque eAxle units that each impel a wheel set, one in the front (150 kW) and the other at the rear (80 kW). Three-point eAxle motor mounts utilizing a lightweight aluminum bracket are positioned symmetrically on each side to counterbalance the eAxle’s torque.

The DIRECT4 system optimizes drive force, traction, and posture control (e.g., pitch, and dive) in accordance with driving conditions and the load borne by each wheel. DIRECT4’s front-to-rear torque distribution encompasses a maximum range of 100:0 to 0:100, contingent on the driving scenario.

The RZ 450e’s 71.4 kWh battery, fashioned by Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (PPES), delivers on performance with a total system horsepower rating of 308 and a 0-60 acceleration time of 5.0 seconds. It boasts an EPA-estimated range rating of 220 miles when equipped with 18” wheels and an EPA-estimated MPGe rating of 115/98/107 (city/highway/combined). When employing 20” wheels, the RZ 450e showcases an EPA-estimated MPGe rating of 102/87/95 with an EPA-estimated range rating of 196 miles.

Captivating Driving Performance

e-TNGA Platform

With its lightweight e-TNGA steel platform, the RZ embodies an optimal mass arrangement and high body rigidity. RZ’s frame integrates high-tensile steel panels and an aluminum hood to diminish weight and enhance rigidity. Harmonizing frame and platform is an array of innovative technologies, including Laser Screw Welding and Laser Peening, short pitch spot welds, and high rigidity expansion joints.

The lightweight platform further enhances stability and ride comfort by situating the 96-cell lithium-ion battery pack beneath the vehicle floor, engendering a low center of gravity and inertia motion. A urethane sealant aids in sealing dust and water out of the stack’s fortified structure, while efficient water-cooling and water-heating systems labor to uphold an ideal battery temperature.

Driving Performance

The front MacPherson strut-type suspension and rear trailing arm multi-link setup, both meticulously tuned and positioned to amplify handling equilibrium, roll posture, and ride comfort, augment the RZ’s drive performance.

At the rear, Frequency Reactive Dampers (FRD) are outfitted to the RZ’s suspension, adjusting the damping force on the extension stroke in response to road surface frequency input. The FRD endeavors to furnish a high level of handling steadiness and aids in accomplishing a comfortable ride. With FRD and e-TNGA, quintessential Lexus Driving Signature traits such as the precise regulation of sprung weight, alongside natural posture alterations, a palpable steering feel and the linear responses of steering, braking, and acceleration maneuvers are facilitated.

Braking and Steering

Lexus Driving Signature is similarly mirrored in the new Active Hydraulic Booster-G (AHB-G) braking system that collaborates with RZ’s regenerative motor capability to decelerate vehicle speed while ameliorating vehicle posture. With a new Vehicle Stability Control actuator and on-demand pressurizing system utilizing a high-performance pump motor, this braking system confers a natural and responsive brake pedal feel. The front-to-rear brake force distribution is governed by autonomous pressure regulation, contributing to a comfortable drive and stable vehicle demeanor while braking. Additionally, ergonomic brake pads are employed for facile pedal adjustments and depression.

Moreover, the Vehicle Braking Posture Control program adjusts front-to-rear brake force distribution following a driver’s braking input and the suspension’s vertical inputs. This endeavors to facilitate handling and body posture during braking and cornering.

A standardized rack assist-type electric power steering (EPS) system reduces the amount of steering input necessitated by employing a new motor and reduction gear setup installed parallel to the steering box. Additionally, a Motor Control Unit (MCU) with an integrated motor and motor current control ECU diminishes the EPS’ size footprint and minimizes operational clamor.

A Glance to Reflect Performance

Lexus’ recognizable spindle grille is succeeded by the Lexus spindle body, as presented with the 2023 Lexus RX, showcasing a distinctive roof spoiler to subdue aerodynamic force. The roof, trunk, and undercover are sculpted to diminish aerodynamic drag and facilitate smooth airflow across the vehicle.

The front fenders seemingly enfold around the wheels and tires from the side, then stream rearward to signify a forward-moving momentum. The robust three-dimensional form over the rear fenders accentuates the tires’ width. Moreover, the flowing contrast of the doors’ sculpted forms aims to create a sparkling surface.

Absent an engine to cool, it results in a low hood design and minimal front grille opening. The grille utilizes a grille shutter to enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The grille shutter is sealed to diminish air resistance when cooling air is superfluous. In the rear, the RZ showcases a neat and simple.
