Omega’s Newest Speed masters Are Built for Awards Season

Colman Domingo has long been one of the sharpest dressers on the red carpet, but since becoming an official Omega “friend of the brand” last year, his watch game has reached a new level. Even before the partnership was formally announced in December, the signs were there: Domingo turned up at the Oscars wearing an off-menu Canopus gold Speedmaster worth around $160,000 as he competed for Best Actor. A few months later, he paired his custom Valentino Met Gala look with a then-unreleased Speedmaster—a privilege usually reserved for longtime Omega ambassadors like Daniel Craig. After months of speculation, and just days after he appeared at the Golden Globes wearing a diamond-set 38mm Speedy, Omega has confirmed that Domingo’s secret Met Gala watch was one of two new Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional models unveiled today.

The latest additions to the Speedmaster family are a pair of 42mm Moonwatch Professionals, one crafted in stainless steel and the other in 18-karat Moonshine Gold, Omega’s proprietary yellow-gold alloy. Both feature a striking black dial and bezel paired with crisp white sub-dials, a high-contrast look that immediately sets them apart.

As any Speedmaster enthusiast will tell you, the Moonwatch Professional represents the most faithful expression of the Speedy lineage, closely echoing the chronographs certified by NASA in 1965 for use during the Apollo missions. That heritage shows through in details like the stepped dial with its subtly recessed outer ring, the iconic “Dot Over Ninety” tachymetre bezel, and the five-link bracelet. It also retains a manual-winding movement, a nod to the era before automatic chronograph wristwatches existed.

That said, these new Moonwatch Professionals have been thoughtfully updated to meet modern expectations. A box-shaped, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment replaces the original hesalite, preserving the vintage look while improving durability. The bracelet has also been upgraded with Omega’s patented comfort-release system, allowing for tool-free micro-adjustments—an innovation astronauts like Armstrong and Aldrin would surely have appreciated. Powering it all is Omega’s Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, certified to the industry’s highest standards for precision, performance, and resistance to magnetic fields.

With close to 200 Speedmaster models currently in Omega’s catalogue—and many more circulating on the vintage market—it might seem like every possible variation already exists. And yet, despite its countless interpretations, from gem-set gold editions to playful Snoopy models, there’s never quite been a Speedmaster like this before. Launching just in time for awards season, the new black-and-white Moonwatch Professionals feel perfectly suited to the red carpet—and look especially at home alongside a tuxedo.
