Phillips opens its highest-value online watch auction, a $4 million sale

Phillips has launched what it describes as the most valuable online watch auction ever organized by its New York team, with nearly 90 timepieces going under the hammer through October 9.

Held in partnership with Bacs & Russo, the sale brings together independent watchmakers and major Swiss maisons across 88 lots. Estimates range from $2,000 to $240,000, with the pre-sale high estimates pointing to a potential total of about $3.94 million.

The auction could comfortably exceed that figure, however, if bidding for its standout lot continues at its current pace. Lots are scheduled to close approximately one minute apart on October 9.

Voutilainen Leads the Sale

The auction is headlined by an unusually rare Kari Voutilainen 28Sport in steel.

Released in 2020, the model was produced in an extremely limited run of eight titanium examples and eight in steel. Designed by Finnish independent watchmaker Kari Voutilainen, the 28Sport combines the refined architecture associated with dress watches with a more contemporary sporting character.

The featured steel example is distinguished by an onyx dial and blue guilloché hour track. Phillips believes the configuration may be limited to just two examples.

Its estimate was set at $120,000 to $240,000, but live bidding has already pushed the watch to $550,000, more than double its high estimate.

The dramatic bidding gap highlights the strength of collector interest in independent watchmaking. While established Swiss maisons continue to dominate the traditional auction market, independent makers such as Voutilainen have developed increasingly strong followings among collectors seeking scarcity, hand craftsmanship and distinctive design.

With bidding still underway, the Voutilainen could ultimately become the defining result of Phillips’ latest online sale.

Beyond the Voutilainen, the auction leans on blue-chip names. A highly sought-after Patek Philippe Ref. 5270J in yellow gold carries an estimate of $80,000 to $160,000, and a Rolex Daytona Ref. 116506, the platinum “Platona,” pairs a platinum case with an ice blue dial and diamond markers.

Independent makers including F.P. Journe appear beside heavyweights such as Jaeger-LeCoultre, giving the sale a deliberately broad draw. Phillips describes the selection as rare, fresh-to-market, and best-in-class timepieces, with an emphasis on exemplary preservation throughout

A spring of records behind it

The auction follows a historic spring season at the house. Phillips achieved $235.5 million over that stretch, and for the first time in the industry’s history it sold three watches for more than $10 million apiece. It also set a record for the highest-grossing watch auction ever.

That record came in Geneva in May, where a single sale notched around 74.8 million Swiss francs, or about $96.3 million at the current exchange rate. The figures frame this online sale as a continuation of momentum rather than an isolated event.

Paul Boutros, deputy chairman and head of watches, Americas, at Phillips, tied the sale to that run in a statement. He said the sale reflects the extraordinary momentum seen throughout the year across the house’s global watch auctions, and he pointed to record-setting spring results in Geneva, Hong Kong, and New York.

Boutros said collectors remain highly focused on the intersection of independent innovation, blue-chip watchmaking, and exemplary preservation. In his words, the watches in this sale embody those qualities, from the Voutilainen to landmark references from Patek Philippe and Rolex that continue to define their categories.

What the sale means for Daytona and Journe prices

The Rolex “Platona” is a reminder of how far Daytona pricing has moved. We covered the model in our ranking of the most expensive Rolex watches, where Paul Newman’s own reference 6239 holds the record at $17.8 million, and the gem-set Rainbow Daytona is the most costly reference you can order new.

When we tracked the most expensive watches ever sold, an F.P. Journe Resonance reached $13.9 million in New York in June, the highest price ever achieved by an independent watchmaker, so the house is selling into a documented upswing. A steel Patek Ref. 1518 took $17.6 million at Phillips Geneva in November 2025.

Even the Voutilainen’s $550,000 running bid is far from those peaks, which is partly the point. The online format moves watches at more accessible tiers, and the $2,000 floor means the sale includes entry points that a Geneva evening sale would not offer.

The sale also draws on our broader coverage of watches jewelry, where auction results and new releases feed the same cycle. A record result in one room raises estimates in the next, and this online sale is the clearest test yet of whether that energy transfers to the screen.

For Boutros, the scope is the point. He closed by calling the group the strongest online watch auction ever presented by the New York team, a claim the pre-sale numbers support. With 88 lots and a near-$4 million projection, the sale is larger than anything the team has put online before.
