PLANO, Texas (Dec. 13, 2023) – The anticipation is at an end. The much-awaited 2024 Lexus GX has finally arrived, boasting an unparalleled fusion of refined features, off-road prowess, and opulent excellence. Reconstructed from the ground up, the entirely new GX was crafted to ignite wanderlust in customers, enticing them to embark on uncharted paths and relish the pleasure of driving.

The original-generation GX made its debut in the North American market in 2002, emerging as a formidable contender in the mid-luxury SUV segment. Enthusiasts of Lexus have long extolled its legendary off-road capabilities and its adeptness in traversing rugged terrain, seamlessly transitioning from daily errands to remote locales. The 2024 GX builds upon the robust foundation established by its predecessor, incorporating intuitive technology, meticulous interior details, and unwavering off-road prowess that discerning Lexus patrons have grown accustomed to.

The 2024 GX is offered in six variations: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and introducing for Lexus, Overtrail and Overtrail+. For a comprehensive breakdown of standard and optional features by variant, kindly refer to the GX Specifications.

GA-F Platform and Suspension

The 2024 GX shares the GA-F platform introduced with the current-generation LX 600. This sturdy yet lightweight ladder frame enhances structural rigidity and augments on-road maneuverability, fundamental elements of Lexus Driving Signature. This platform is meticulously engineered to withstand off-road torsional forces, optimize suspension performance, facilitate stable wheel articulation, and ensure consistent tire contact, all while preserving in-cabin stability. This reinforced frame also empowers owners to equip their GX with Lexus dealer-available accessories and equipment, such as rooftop tents, recovery kits, and more offered through the Associated Accessory Parts (AAP) Program.

A freshly developed double-wishbone front suspension is paired with a multi-link rear suspension to achieve a balance between exceptional off-road performance and on-road handling prowess. An optional Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) dynamically adjusts damping forces based on evolving road conditions. The GX also adopts Electronic Power Steering (EPS), enhancing steering responsiveness both on and off-road.

Enhanced Engine: 3.4-L Twin Turbo V6 and Direct Shift-10AT

The entirely new GX offers two powertrain options to cater to diverse customer needs. For the 2024 model year in the U.S., the GX will be equipped with a highly capable and efficient twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine mated to a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission, delivering an enhanced EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 21 MPG. The twin-turbo V6 generates 349 horsepower, surpassing the previous generation V8’s output of 301 horsepower, while torque output also increases significantly to 479 lb.-ft. The twin turbochargers ensure smooth and consistent acceleration, facilitating precise power delivery in both on and off-road conditions. Towing capacity has been elevated to up to 9,063 lbs. for Premium and Premium+ trims and 9,096 lbs. for the Overtrail trim equipped with the standard tow hitch.

A hybrid powertrain will be introduced in the U.S. at a later date.

Lexus Overtrail Initiative

As announced at the Tokyo Outdoor Show, Lexus has launched the groundbreaking “Overtrail Initiative,” aimed at inspiring customers worldwide to embark on refined outdoor adventures. The objective is to provide more opportunities for Lexus customers in the future, including potential products, accessories, gear, and experiences. The all-new Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades fall under the umbrella of this initiative.

Esteemed Off-Road Performance

Since its inception, the GX has been celebrated for its off-road capabilities, a legacy that continues with the 2024 GX. Full-Time 4WD comes standard for consistent responsiveness across diverse terrains.

Essential for off-road excursions, the Torsen® limited-slip locking center differential is standard on all GX models, distributing the engine’s power evenly to all wheels to ensure exceptional control in low traction scenarios and prevent excessive wheel spin. During acceleration through a turn, the Torsen® differential optimizes power distribution based on the load on the rear left and right wheels to achieve controlled performance. In straight-line driving, it responds adeptly to changes in road conditions, contributing to overall vehicle stability.

For added traction, the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims exclusively feature an electronically controlled locking rear differential, activated via a console-mounted switch, which evenly distributes power between the left and right rear wheels to maintain uniform wheel speed. Additionally, in specific situations, the locking rear differential ensures power is directed to the wheel with traction.

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail and Overtrail+ variants adopt a standard Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS), striking a balance between off-road drivability and on-road handling stability. This system automatically adjusts the front and rear stabilizer bars to optimize control and enhance wheel articulation. Depending on driving conditions, speed, steering input, and the Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) mode selected by the driver, the system can independently engage or disengage the front and rear stabilizer bars as necessary.

Crawl Control can be activated when the vehicle is in low range (L4) and enables the GX to move forward or backward at one of five driver-selected low-speed settings. Crawl Control intelligently manages engine output and hydraulic braking pressure to minimize tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior. The GX boasts up to a 26-degree approach, 24-degree breakover, and 21-degree departure angles.

MTS returns on the GX with enhanced functionality and capability. This system is designed to deliver optimized drive power, hydraulic brake pressure, and suspension control based on the selected mode. Transitioning between high range (H4) and low range (L4) is now quicker compared to the previous generation GX, thanks to enhancements to the electronic transfer case. L4 encompasses four modes: Auto, Sand, Mud, and Rock. H4 offers five modes: Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow. With Multi-Terrain Select engaged, the Multi-Terrain Monitor aids the driver by providing enhanced visibility beneath and around the vehicle while off-roading. The Multi-Terrain Monitor utilizes four cameras within the Panoramic View Monitor System (PVM) to project underfloor, front, side, and rear-view camera images onto the 14-inch display, enabling the driver to assess road conditions, blind spots, and obstacle distances.
