The streets of Glasgow came alive with excitement and energy on Saturday, October 5, 2024, as over 1,000 young athletes participated in Scotland’s largest children’s running event, the AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great Scottish Run.
With ages ranging from 3 to 15, around 1,250 eager runners and their families took part in the sold-out event, showcasing the enthusiasm and athletic spirit of the city’s youth. The event featured various races tailored to different age groups:
- 1.2km Mini Run: For children aged 3 to 8, combining fun and activity.
- 2.5km Junior Run: A more challenging distance for runners aged 9 to 15.
- 70-meter Toddler Dash: A delightful sprint for the youngest participants.
The event also saw creativity on full display, with many runners sporting superhero-themed costumes alongside the official running club kits. From George Square, the runners set off accompanied by iconic characters like Spiderman, Batman, and Superwoman, along with Tyney, the Great Run mascot.
Adding to the excitement, runners were cheered on by BBC Gladiators Apollo and Sabre, as well as two-time Great Scottish Run champion Chris Thompson. Sabre expressed her delight at the event:
“It’s an honor to promote fitness and activity in such an iconic city. Glasgow’s energy and enthusiasm are truly unmatched.”
The celebration culminated in a fun-filled mascot race, where local charities and sports teams showcased their competitive spirit. Buddy the Star, representing the Brightest Star charity, emerged victorious, capping off an action-packed day.
With participants from running clubs like Giffnock North AC, Aberdeen Athletics, and Airdrie Harriers claiming top spots, the event celebrated not only individual achievements but also the strength of Scotland’s running community.
The AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great Scottish Run set the stage for a weekend of running, with the Great Scottish Run taking place the following day. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, and entries are now open for 2025.
All participants received well-deserved medals, leaving with not just prizes but unforgettable memories of a day filled with community, fitness, and fun.
