‘Made in Corridonia’: How Santoni grew from shoe manufacturer to luxury brand

Santoni: A Legacy of Craftsmanship, Luxury, and Innovation

Stepping into the Santoni factory is like walking through a living testament to Italian excellence. From the founders’ portraits to the iconic shoe displays and the thriving Accademia dell’Eccellenza, every element reflects the brand’s rich history, commitment to sustainability, and vision for the future. Here’s a closer look at what makes Santoni a standout in the world of luxury craftsmanship.

The story of Santoni began in the 1970s during Italy’s post-war economic resurgence. Andrea Santoni, a skilled shoemaker, and his wife Rosa, a seamstress, turned their garage into a small shoe-making workshop. Andrea managed production and business, while Rosa and a small team meticulously crafted formal men’s shoes.

Their dedication paid off, allowing the couple to expand their operation. By the 1990s, their son Giuseppe Santoni had taken the reins, transforming the family business into a global luxury brand. Today, the factory, located in Corridonia, Marche—a region famed for footwear craftsmanship—spans over 300,000 square feet, a significant leap from its original 15,000-square-foot facility. The family legacy continues, with Giuseppe’s son and wife actively involved in the business.

While Santoni is synonymous with impeccable men’s shoes, the brand has continually evolved its offerings. Starting with formal leather-soled shoes, it later expanded into sneakers, women’s footwear, and leather goods like belts and bags. Today, men’s shoes remain the cornerstone, accounting for 70% of sales, while women’s collections and sneakers make up the rest.

The trademark orange soles and ombré finishes reflect Santoni’s commitment to detail and innovation. As Giuseppe notes, the challenge has been transitioning from a manufacturer to a full-fledged luxury lifestyle brand—and Santoni is rising to the occasion.

Santoni’s ambitions extend beyond footwear. With a growing focus on leather accessories, celebrity endorsements, and direct-to-consumer (DTC) strategies, the brand is carving its place as a lifestyle icon. The company’s Accademia dell’Eccellenza ensures that the next generation of artisans continues the tradition of Italian craftsmanship while embracing modern sustainability practices.

From its humble beginnings in a garage to its status as a global luxury brand, Santoni embodies the essence of Italian family businesses: passion, precision, and perseverance. With its eyes set on the future, Santoni is not just preserving its legacy but expanding it into a lifestyle that resonates with discerning consumers worldwide.
