Simon Porte Jacquemus received the Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion with a yellow belt to start New York Fashion Week. The Couture Council of The Museum at FIT awarded the award in Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater. Jacquemus joins Maria Grazia Chiuri, Gabriela Hearst, Oscar de la Renta, Thom Browne, Carolina Herrera, and Karl Lagerfeld as awardees.
In his award speech, Jacquemus said, “At 19, I launched Jacquemus with nothing more than a dream—no resources, no contacts—just a clear vision to redefine fashion, to approach it from a fresh perspective. I am delighted to tell that 15 years later, Jacquemus has over 300 workers and remains independent. This is a great accomplishment for me.”
His narrative showed the audience how hard it is to develop an independent fashion company in a competitive sector.Jacquemus is a standout in the fashion industry because of his dedication to preserving his original vision and following his roots.
Drawing a mix of fashion icons and powerful people, including Alina Cho, Ramona Singer, Lauren Santo Domingo, Rickie De Sole, Fern Mallis, Christian Cowan, Meredith Marks, and Ken Downing, Nordstrom sponsored the event. The event not only celebrated Jacquemus’s achievements but also raised money for The Museum at FIT, therefore supporting its ongoing work to protect and advance fashion history. Deena Aljuhani Abdulaziz, creator of D’NA, and Sarah Wetenhall, owner and president of The Colony Palm Beach, co-hosted the event.
The ceremony also underlined the need to develop fresh fashion industry talent. Majoring in Art History and Museum Professions at FIT, Patrick Garry won the museum’s Student Award, marking a turning point in his career.
