The 7 Most Extraordinary Cars from California’s Ultimate Porsche Showcase

A Celebration of Heritage and Innovation

In the heart of Costa Mesa, amid the rare Southern California rain, Porsche devotees gathered for Air | Water, a bold evolution of the cult-favorite Luftgekühlt show. Where Luft celebrates Porsche’s iconic air-cooled lineage, Air | Water casts a wider net—embracing both air- and water-cooled models, race cars, bespoke builds, and one-of-a-kind oddities that push the boundaries of what defines the marque.

With over 900 curated vehicles sprawling across the Orange County Fairgrounds—from dirt-track warriors to barn-find treasures—this year’s Air | Water delivered a visceral experience that celebrated the diversity of Porsche’s past, present, and future. Here are seven standout vehicles that stole the spotlight.

1.) 1955 Porsche Mikafa Tempo Sport Camper

Few vehicles spark curiosity like this ultrarare, one-of-three camper built under Porsche license. Featuring a full kitchenette, Electrolux fridge, and an impossibly compact bathroom—all wrapped in 1950s German charm—it’s more than a mobile retreat. At its heart is a Porsche 356 flat-four engine, making this rolling oddity as mechanically compelling as it is historically unique.

2.) 1977 Porsche/Bisimoto 935 Moby X

A radical reimagining of the Porsche 935 silhouette, Bisimoto’s electric Moby X turns heads and expectations. Powered by a nearly 700 hp electric motor, this one-off beast blends vintage Le Mans styling with cutting-edge EV technology. Driven through the rain on racing slicks, it’s a testament to Bisimoto Engineering’s fearless creativity—one that even traditionalists couldn’t ignore.

3.) 1988 Havoline-Sponsored Porsche 962C

A symbol of Porsche’s dominance in endurance racing, this 962C evokes a golden era of motorsport. Campaigned by legends like Bob Wollek and Klaus Ludwig, its 700 hp water-cooled flat-six once tore through Daytona and Sebring. Today, it remains an icon of Porsche’s relentless pursuit of racing perfection.

4.) 1993 Porsche 964 by Joshua Vides

Artist Joshua Vides transformed a Porsche 964 into a rolling optical illusion. With a hand-drawn black-and-white motif reminiscent of comic-book linework, this art car blurs the line between two and three dimensions. Originally part of Vides’ Check Engine Light exhibit, it served as a stark and stylish contrast to the raw performance machines nearby.

5.) Vern Schuppan’s 962-Inspired Supercar

Born from the dreams of Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan, this street-legal prototype is rooted in Porsche’s 962 legacy. Built with a Porsche-approved carbon-fiber chassis and backed by Japanese investors, just two examples were ever completed. Priced around $2 million in 1994, it remains one of the rarest and most ambitious Porsche-adjacent projects ever attempted.

6.) 2000 Lola B2K/10 Porsche Prototype

Wearing dramatic bodywork and boasting a twin-turbo flat-six from Porsche’s GT1 program, this Lola B2K/10 is a fascinating outlier. Though its tenure at Daytona was plagued by reliability issues, it stands as a one-of-one mashup of British engineering and Porsche performance—a true unicorn in the paddock.

7.) Meyers Manx Carrera GT

Equal parts dune buggy and Porsche fever dream, this Meyers Manx is powered by a rare four-cam engine from the 356 Carrera GT. Commissioned by Road Scholars, it’s a hypothetical homage to the imagination of Porsche racing legend Vasek Polak. Equal parts desert toy and collector’s fantasy, it proves that even the sand can’t escape Stuttgart’s influence.
