The Macallan’s Carta Nautica 20 Years Old Sets Sail from Changi

The Macallan has unveiled a travel-retail-exclusive 20-year-old single malt inspired by the journey of oak across continents. With immersive airport pop-ups and a rare vintage release for collectors, the launch blends whisky craftsmanship, ocean-inspired art and luxury travel.

A new voyage for The Macallan

Singapore’s Changi Airport has become the launchpad for the latest release from The Macallan. The Carta Nautica 20 Years Old made its global debut in Singapore, with an initial exclusive sale at Changi Airport before becoming available at selected airports worldwide from 19 October 2026.

The launch celebration took place at Fico on East Coast Park, bringing attention to a whisky whose identity is built around travel, craftsmanship and the influence of oak.

Why it matters: The release connects luxury whisky with the international travel experience. Changi is not simply a retail location for the launch; it is part of the story behind a product designed for travellers and collectors.

The whisky: Two oak traditions, one distinctive profile

The Carta Nautica 20 Years Old is first matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, before being moved into casks that previously held American bourbon. This combination reflects the transatlantic journey referenced in the Carta Nautica name.

Bottled at 42% alcohol by volume (ABV), the whisky features a layered flavour profile:

  • Aroma: Orange peel, creamy vanilla, charred pineapple, mango and apricot conserve.

  • Palate: Peach tea, caramelised figs, leather and chocolate orange.

  • Finish: Dried tropical fruit, caramel and toasted oak spice.

The release is priced at US$800, positioning it firmly in the luxury single-malt category.

What this means: The maturation process brings together influences from different oak traditions, while the tasting notes move between fruit, sweetness, richer savoury character and spice. The appeal is in the combination of cask history, age and carefully presented flavours.

Art inspired by the ocean

The packaging artwork was created by American artist Amy Genser, whose paper-based works explore layered textures and organic forms. Her artistic approach echoes the movement of water, giving the Carta Nautica collection its ocean-inspired visual identity.

The collaboration extends the release beyond the whisky itself. The packaging becomes part of the experience, linking the product’s journey across continents with the natural patterns and movement of the sea.

What this means: The Macallan is combining whisky-making with contemporary art to create a product that appeals to design-conscious buyers as well as whisky enthusiasts.

Inside the immersive Changi Airport pop-ups

The Carta Nautica concept continues through two immersive retail installations created in partnership with Lotte Duty Free and Changi Airport Group.

The first pop-up at Terminal 3 runs until 22 November 2026. The experience then moves to Terminal 2 from 26 November 2026 to 20 January 2027.

Visitors can expect illuminated arches, an underwater-inspired floor, sculptural coral forms in The Macallan’s signature red and a feature wall introducing Nautyria, the oceanic world at the centre of the Carta Nautica story.

An interactive table traces the journey of oak from North America to Jerez and Scotland. Travellers can move miniature casks along the route, turning the whisky’s maturation story into a hands-on experience.

A gifting station also allows shoppers to personalise a bottle with a Changi-exclusive blue Merlion cap.

What this means: These installations transform airport shopping into a branded experience. Instead of simply purchasing a bottle, visitors can explore the story behind its ingredients, maturation and design, while adding a personalised element to their purchase.

A rare vintage for collectors

For collectors, the article also highlights the Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987, a significantly rarer release displayed alongside the 20 Years Old.

The vintage whisky was matured for more than 38 years and bottled at 45.2% ABV. It marks the beginning of a new series of vintage releases and comes in a sculpted wooden presentation case with flowing contours.

Its listed price is US$13,500, reflecting its positioning as a collector-focused luxury release rather than an everyday whisky purchase.

What this means: The 1987 bottling gives the collection a second dimension. While the 20 Years Old is the headline travel-retail release, the older vintage targets collectors interested in extended maturation, rarity and presentation.

The bigger picture: Whisky, art and luxury travel

The Macallan’s Carta Nautica launch illustrates how luxury brands are increasingly building a complete experience around a product. The whisky’s appeal is supported by its maturation story, an artist-designed package, interactive airport installations and a rare vintage for collectors.

Changi Airport provides an international stage for this approach, bringing together travellers, luxury retail and brand storytelling.

For whisky enthusiasts, the key attraction is the 20 Years Old’s combination of sherry-seasoned and ex-bourbon casks. For design lovers, Amy Genser’s artwork adds a visual narrative. For collectors, the 1987 vintage offers a much more exclusive proposition.

Ultimately, Carta Nautica is presented not just as a bottle of Scotch, but as a story of craftsmanship and travel—one that begins at Changi and follows the journey of oak across continents.
