Jane Birkin’s Personally Inscribed Hermès Birkin Bag Is Heading to Auction in Paris

Luxury collectors will soon have an opportunity to own a rare piece of fashion history: a Hermès Birkin bag that once belonged to the legendary actress, singer, and style icon Jane Birkin. The distinctive black leather handbag, complete with her handwritten signature and a personal message to a friend, is scheduled to go under the hammer at Bonhams Paris later this month.

The Birkin 30, crafted from black Togo leather, is expected to attract considerable attention when it appears at Bonhams’ Fashion & Handbags auction on November 24. Beyond its prestigious ownership history, the bag carries a personal inscription written by Birkin herself in white ink, making it an especially meaningful collectible.

The story behind the iconic handbag dates back to 1984, when Hermès created the original Birkin for its namesake. According to fashion lore, Birkin found herself seated beside then-Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London. During their conversation, she explained her difficulty finding a practical yet elegant handbag capable of accommodating her everyday essentials.

Inspired by the encounter, Dumas designed a bag specifically for her. The result was an all-black leather prototype that eventually became one of the most recognizable and sought-after luxury accessories in the world. That original handbag later sold for a record-breaking $10.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction in 2025.

The upcoming auction piece, dating to 2009, has a different but equally fascinating history. Birkin personalized its black leather exterior with a handwritten dedication to her friend Georgia. Translated from French, the message reads: “Georgia, so that you may be safe, for us, your friends. Jane B Athens.”

According to Bonhams, the gift was connected to an unexpected turn of events during Birkin’s visit to Athens, Greece, in April 2010. She had traveled to attend the 11th Francophone Film Festival and promote her album, Jane Birkin au Palace. However, the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjöll volcano disrupted international air travel, resulting in widespread flight cancellations.

The disruption prevented Birkin from joining her daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, in the United States. Instead, she remained in Athens and decided to visit her friend Georgia, presenting her with the personalized Hermès handbag. Bonhams has not revealed Georgia’s surname or the identity of the current consignor.

Personalizing luxury handbags was a familiar habit for Birkin. She was known for using white pens to decorate her own bags and those belonging to friends, giving the accessories a distinctive, lived-in character. On another occasion, she customized a Birkin owned by her longtime friend Midori Senga, whose family owned Tokyo’s Agnes Hotel. Birkin even stepped on the Courchevel leather handbag to soften it and give it a more relaxed appearance.

Her unconventional approach helped redefine the meaning of luxury, demonstrating that an expensive accessory did not need to remain pristine to be beautiful.

Hubert Felbacq, director of fashion and accessories at Bonhams Paris, described Birkin’s relationship with the handbag as one of fashion’s most enduring stories. He noted that her personal style transformed the accessory into a symbol of effortless Parisian elegance, challenging traditional expectations surrounding luxury goods.

The upcoming sale is expected to achieve between €40,000 and €70,000, approximately $45,000 to $78,800. However, its connection to Birkin could push the final price considerably higher.

There is already precedent for strong auction results involving her personal collection. In 2021, a black Togo leather Birkin 35 previously owned by the star sold at Bonhams for £119,000, approximately $160,000, exceeding its presale estimate by five times.

For collectors, the upcoming auction represents more than an opportunity to acquire an iconic Hermès design. It offers a rare connection to the woman whose personality, creativity, and effortless approach to fashion helped turn an everyday handbag into one of the greatest symbols of luxury.
