the rarest and most unique

Porsche connoisseurs, take note—one of the rarest and most unique interpretations of the legendary 959 is about to go under the hammer, and it might just be your dream car.

Set to headline RM Sotheby’s upcoming Milan auction on May 22, this singular 1987 Porsche 959 “Speedster” isn’t just rare—it’s the only one in existence. Crafted by Karl-Heinz Feustel, a name well known in Porsche enthusiast circles, this car blends factory engineering with one man’s bold vision of open-air driving excellence.

To understand why this 959 is so special, you need to know a bit about the original. Developed as Porsche’s road-legal response to Group B rally racing, the 959 was revolutionary for its time. With a 2.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and advanced all-wheel drive, the 959 wasn’t just quick—it was the fastest production car in the world when it debuted. Only about 337 examples were built, making it one of the rarest and most technologically advanced Porsches of the 1980s.

This particular 959 began life as a “Komfort” model, finished in silver over a beige and black interior. It was delivered new to German race car driver Jürgen Lässig, fresh off a podium finish at the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, the car’s story took a turn when it was involved in an autobahn accident just a year later. That’s when Feustel stepped in.

More than just a Porsche enthusiast, Feustel owned a Porsche workshop near Cologne and saw an opportunity to reimagine the 959 as a convertible. The result is what you see here—a Grand Prix White “Speedster” with a striking blue leather interior and a fully electric soft top. The car looks like a product of the Porsche factory, complete with a matching removable hardtop, blue tonneau cover, a spare short “Speedster” windshield, and alternate side mirrors.

The car made its public debut at both the 1989 Frankfurt International Motor Show and the Essen Motor Show, standing out as a vision of how far the 959’s design could be pushed. Since then, it has been carefully preserved, driven sparingly (just over 5,150 miles on the odometer), and recently serviced to ensure it’s in top form for its next chapter.

Given its provenance, uniqueness, and stunning condition, RM Sotheby’s has priced this rare Porsche between $1.25 million and $1.7 million. For the serious collector—or anyone with an appreciation for automotive artistry—it represents a singular opportunity to own a piece of Porsche history that quite literally exists nowhere else.
