GX Superyachts’ New 138-Foot GX42 Offers Hybrid Power and Long-Range Cruising

GX Superyachts is advancing its approach to efficient yacht design with the GX42, a 138-foot superyacht that integrates diesel-electric propulsion, battery storage and solar panels to deliver a quieter and more energy-efficient experience at sea.

Launched by Greenline Yachts in 2024, the Slovenian company developed the GX42 as part of a wider lineup spanning 79 to 184 feet. The vessel was designed in-house, with Marco Casali, founder of Too Design, leading the design and Francesco Rogantin, founder of Names studio, handling naval architecture and engineering.

The GX42 features a parallel diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system supported by a substantial battery bank and expansive solar panels. By integrating these technologies, the yacht can select the most suitable energy source depending on its operating conditions. Diesel engines can power longer journeys, while electricity can supply onboard systems when the vessel is at anchor.

This configuration offers the potential for up to 48 hours of zero-emission operation at anchor and can reduce onboard electricity consumption by as much as 45 percent.

Designed for Efficient Long-Distance Voyages

Efficiency also informs the yacht’s exterior design. Its long, slender hull is engineered to move smoothly through the water, helping it achieve an estimated range of approximately 5,000 nautical miles at an economical cruising speed of 9 knots. When conventional propulsion is used, the yacht can reach speeds of up to 17 knots.

GX Superyachts founder and CEO Vladimir Zinchenko said the vessel reflects the company’s belief that efficiency should be integrated into the design process from the outset.

By bringing together hybrid propulsion, battery storage, solar generation, an efficiency-focused hull and intelligent energy management, the GX42 creates a unified system in which each component contributes to the yacht’s overall performance.

Inside Merinos, the First GX42

Named Merinos, the first GX42 features a Raised Pilot House configuration, characterized by a gracefully curved superstructure and streamlined upper deck. Its layout emphasizes entertaining, comfort and extended stays aboard.

The main deck features a salon and dining area with seating for 10. Above it, the expansive upper deck provides multiple lounging areas, sunbeds, a bar and a Jacuzzi.

Guest accommodation includes a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, complete with a private forward terrace. The lower deck houses a spacious VIP suite with a fold-down balcony, alongside three additional guest cabins.

Walnut, Italian leather, stone and neutral fabrics give the interiors a warm, tactile character.

Rather than prioritizing speed or an overtly imposing appearance, the design team focused on creating a family-friendly yacht suited to spending extended periods on the water.

“This is no showboat for flexing the muscles,” Casali said. He explained that the team worked closely with the owners to deliver a design that reflects their priorities for comfortable, longer stays onboard.

With its integrated hybrid technology, long-distance cruising range and generous living spaces, the GX42 brings together energy efficiency and the comforts expected of a modern superyacht.
