Range Rover Electric (RRE) redefines the luxury SUV segment by fusing seamless refinement with cutting-edge technology and all-terrain capability, as proven during Arctic winter testing. Over the lifetime of an EV, it will produce zero emissions and save more than 30 tonnes of CO₂ compared to diesel and petrol vehicles, which produce 164g/Km and 143g/Km respectively. Additionally, electric vehicles generally offer lower running costs thanks to cheaper electricity and efficiency technologies like regenerative braking.
In a bold stride toward sustainable mobility, the Range Rover Electric has completed its second phase of winter testing in the Arctic Circle. Enduring extreme sub-zero temperatures, the electric SUV displayed remarkable durability and innovation, emerging as a strong new player in the electric vehicle landscape.
During this latest round of testing, RRE prototypes covered over 45,000 miles across frozen lakes and rugged terrain in Northern Europe. These harsh conditions served as an ideal proving ground to validate its dynamic performance and advanced thermal management technologies. Central to this innovation is the new ThermAssist system, designed to optimize driving range even in -10°C temperatures. This intelligent thermal management feature cuts heating energy consumption by up to 40%, supports charging performance, and ensures the cabin remains consistently comfortable—addressing one of the key challenges faced by EVs in colder climates.

The RRE also boasts a high-voltage 800V battery, the first to be entirely designed and built in-house by Jaguar Land Rover. With a 117kWh capacity and cell-to-pack architecture, the battery offers high energy density, faster charging times, and extended driving range. Seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s chassis, it elevates both performance and the hallmark refinement that defines the Range Rover name.
According to Thomas Müller, Executive Director of Product Engineering at JLR, the rigorous Arctic testing was essential in confirming the vehicle’s reliability and resilience in the real world. He praised the ThermAssist system for surpassing expectations and ensuring both optimal range and charging speed in frigid environments. In addition to this innovation, the RRE is equipped with twin-chamber air suspension and single-pedal driving capabilities, both tailored to handle diverse terrains. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) further enhances traction stability, reacting up to 100 times faster than conventional internal combustion engine systems.
Visually, the Range Rover Electric stays true to its legacy, with design language that remains nearly identical to its ICE counterparts. Built on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform at JLR’s Solihull production facility, the SUV embraces a philosophy of subtle evolution rather than radical transformation. Vehicle Engineering Director Matt Becker noted that maintaining the Range Rover’s trademark blend of refinement and capability in an electric vehicle required significant engineering efforts, including increased torsional stiffness and re-tuned suspension.
Subtle design changes, such as a reimagined front grille made possible by reduced cooling demands, distinguish the electric model. Thanks to a center of gravity 50–60mm lower than the V8 variant, the RRE benefits from improved composure and balance, bolstered by dual-rate springs and anticipatory suspension software.
Performance metrics are equally impressive. Early specifications suggest about 542bhp, 627lb ft of torque, a range of approximately 300 miles, and 0–62mph acceleration in just 4.5 seconds. Launch pricing is expected to mirror that of the V8 variant—around £170,000 (or nearly US$228,000)—offering discerning buyers a real choice between conventional powertrains and electric propulsion, all without sacrificing luxury or versatility.
Despite its forward-looking approach, Range Rover is not turning its back on internal combustion. Recognizing that many clients live in regions where combustion engine bans are not imminent, the brand will continue to offer petrol and diesel options alongside the new electric model.
