There was a high travel demand this past summer. Pictures of the congested streets of Europe, in particular, served as a beautiful reminder of how wonderful traveling during the shoulder season can be. In my opinion, the best times to go are in the transitional months when conditions are milder, crowds at the sites are lighter, and lodging costs are more reasonable. I’ve found London to be full of fascinating options during the fall months of September through October and the spring months of April and May, many of which emphasize the city’s thriving art scene and varied population.
I will soon travel over the pond again to see the much anticipated Spirited Away stage show at the London Coliseum. One of my favorite movies is the well-known picture by Hayao Miyazaki, and I can view it with improved seat availability this time of year. If you happen to be in the city, there are also several recently established hotels: The Peninsula London, which is situated between Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park; the city’s first Raffles at the OWO; and the aparthotel Ember Locke, which is modeled by art deco and is close to Notting Hill. Before rates increase and availability decreases throughout the Christmas season, shoulder season is the best time to get better deals on accommodations and upgrades.
Even if the holidays aren’t here yet, shoulder season in London offers a variety of seasonal events to enjoy. Harry Potter enthusiasts won’t want to miss Hogwarts in the Snow in November when they can explore Warner Bros. Studio Tour London on a self-guided walking tour decorated for the joyous Christmas season. Christmas at Kew Gardens is when thousands of lights and immersive displays come to life. Purchase your tickets well in advance. During the 10-day EFG Festival, which features performances by internationally recognized jazz performers, jazz enthusiasts may take in live concerts at locations across London.
Enjoy outdoor events like the April Eid Festival in Trafalgar Square and Shakespeare’s birthday with special walking tours across the city. This includes a complete program at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater when the weather warms up a bit next spring.
During this year’s season, I frequently find myself in Brixton, a neighborhood that always provides many activities and food options. London’s diasporic populations are on a whole show at Brixton Village Market. Supercute, a bar run by Dominicans, and Addis in Brixton, which serves some of the best organic Ethiopian coffee beans, are two of my favorite stores. Take a seat on the reggae music-filled terrace at Fish, Tings & Wings and order something like the curry chicken roti served with pumpkin tamarind kuchela or stewed oxtail with pineapple, mango, and ginger chutney. Here, you may also help out tiny companies that provide anything from crystal healing to antique Victorian furniture.
Shoulder season also guarantees top bookings at some of the city’s most incredible spots because a vacation to London would only be complete with a bit of tea. My ideal place to cozy up with a drink? The jewel box setting at Rosewood London’s Mirror Room, where sweets with vibrant colors, such as vanilla cheesecake adorned with chocolate vines and edible yuzu leaves, bring British artist David Hockney’s paintings to life.
